Saltwater Fish for sale

Marine fish are some of the best additions you can make to your saltwater aquarium. Many marine fish are sought after for their bright colors, vivid patterns and spunky personalities.

At Salty Underground we have a wide variety of saltwater fish for sale, including reef-safe saltwater fish and predatory saltwater fish.  We have several articles about marine fish for sale here.

We do not dropship our saltwater fish from wholesalers nor do we pass them on to you, our customer, immediately after arrival. Our saltwater fish are inspected for disease, color, injuries, and behavior upon arrival. Afterward, they are acclimated and placed in a recovery system or quarantine tanks depending on need. We quarantine all of our saltwater fish for at least 7 days and if not showing any signs of disease and are eating properly we move them to a long-term holding system and listed for sale.

  • Angelfish

    Most Angelfish are a popular, colorful marine fish. Being a live saltwater animal, they have their own personality and temperament. One may be reef safe and mild mannered while another of the same kind can pick on coral and even another be a bully.

  • Anthias Fish

    Anthias are a colorful active fish and a good addition to the home aquarium. They can be kept in a group of females and one male. The males will fight if there is more than one male in an aquarium. If all females are purchased, it is not unheard of that one female will ungo a change, become male. They do best if fed more than once a day. They are reef safe and are not aggressive to other aquarium inhabitants.

  • Aqua-cultured Marine Fish

    Salty Underground features a selection of captive bred and captive raised saltwater fish. Captive bred fish are not only the choice of the environmentally aware aquarist but for any aquarist wanting to improve their success and enjoyment in keeping a marine aquarium. Capitve bred fish are usually hardier than their wild collected counterparts and also accept prepared aquarium foods readily.

  • Basslet

    Basslets are small and hardy fish. They are peaceful but can be territorial. Basslets like to hang out in the water column. Plenty of rock is recommended for hiding spots. 

  • Beginner Marine fish

    Saltwater fish in this category are hardy and easy to keep. Perfect for those new to the saltwater hobby.

  • Blenny

    Blennies are a smaller saltwater fish that can have a cute little personality. They are usually easy to keep and will maintain a small territory that they call home. They are open water swimmers as well as sand dwellers. They are considered reef safe but may perch on corals.

  • Boxfish

    Boxfish adapt well to captivity. They need rockwork and adequate water flow. Diet must be a variety of sponge, worms, and crustaceans. Peaceful tankmates are best.

  • Butterflyfish

    The group of marine fish, Butterfly, can have up to 130 species.  They live around the tropical reefs and are concentrated in the Indo-Pacific region.  Butterfly fish spend their days pecking at coral and live rock eating worms, small invertebrates and some coral polyps.

  • Cardinal Fish

    Most Cardinalfish grow up to two inches in size but that can vary depending on the species. Their small statue makes them great additions to any peaceful aquarium. They adapt well to life in captivity, they are open swimmers that like to dwell at the front of tanks, providing them with lots of rockwork and ornamental coral helps them evade tankmates. With appropriate care, these fish can be successfully bred and raised in captivity.

  • Chromis

    Chromis are a damselfish that are less aggressive than most other damselfish. They are also a schooling fish which have a nice visual impact when kept in groups. Chromis are reefsafe and will not bully or harm other species of marine fish, invertebrates, and coral.

  • Clownfish

    Clownfish are small to medium-sized Damsel fish and can reach a size of 4.3in, they come in a variation of colors including orange, red, pink, white, and black. Besides boosting their bright colors, they are very hardy and well suited to life in an aquarium. As Damsel fish they can be very territorial, so placing a small group of the same species in your tank at the same time is ideal. Given sufficient space, they do not pose a problem to other fish and are considered reef safe.

  • Damselfish

    Most Damselfish are a smaller fairly hardy saltwater fish. They make an excellent beginner marine fish because they are so hardy. Some in this species can be aggressive towards other tank mates especially if kept in a smaller reef aquariums.

  • Dartfish

    Dartfish are similar to Gobies. They are a peaceful saltwater fish that likes to burrow in the sand and under live rock. They are easy to keep and feed in a covered marine aquarium.

  • Dottyback

    Dottybacks are small saltwater fish of over 100 species. The Dottyback is hardy, intelligent and usually brightly colored. It is a popular choice among aquarists. Most species will not be longer than 4 inches in length at maturity. They also adjust well to life in an aquarium.

  • Eel

    Eels are fascinating marine animal which can be kept in the home aquarium. Eels normally do not come out during the day and may choose a home in the live rock where you will just see the head. They will require meaty foods and a larger size aquarium with a tight-fitted lid to keep them from escaping.

  • Filefish

    Filefish are an easy going fish. The Filefish does very well in captivity. They spend their day almost stationary in areas around the aquarium pecking at rocks foraging for food.

  • Goby

    Gobies are a smaller saltwater aquarium fish that are not aggressive to other marine inhabitants. They will stay small and are not normally hard to keep. They can be kept in groups which will increase the activity in your aquarium.

  • Goatfish

    Goatfish are sometimes referred to as the red mullet. They have two chin barbs that locate food such as small fish, worms, and crustaceans in the substrate. They are nocturnal eaters and spend daylight hours resting.

  • Grouper

    Groupers are hardy and great additions. They will eat anything that will fit into its mouth. They thrive in good filtration systems with plenty of rock to hide.

  • Hawkfish

    The Hawkfish come in many vibrant colors. They are a hardy fish and great for a beginner aquarist. Hawkfish can be frisky at times. They will perch onto rocks waiting for food. They are not reef safe as they may eat shrimp and other crustaceans.

  • Hogfish

    Hogfish are hardy aquarium dwelling fish and do well in captivity. They feed on small fish and crustaceans. Some Hogfish grow to be very large but are for the most part very docile.

  • Jaw Fish

    Jawfish are a bottom dwelling Goby fish that like to burrow under live rock and sand. They are reef safe and peaceful marine fish that will not harm other aquarium inhabitants.

  • Lionfish

    Lionfish are a flashy, show stopping, venomous fish. They have long spines that can pack quite a sting. Lionfish are aggressive and should only be placed with aggressive and larger fish than itself.

  • Nano fish

    Saltwater fish in this category are suitable for the small saltwater nanotanks or aquariums.

  • Pipefish

    The Pipefish are a subfamily of small fishes, which include Seahorse and Seadragons.

  • Psuedochromis

    Psuedochromis are referred to also as a Dottyback. They are a hardy fish and adjust well to captivity. These fish come in very bright colors. They do well with plenty of rock to hide and forage for food. 

  • Pufferfish

    Pufferfish have great personalities and can have strong bonds with their humans. They have strong teeth/beaks that can crack open shells of snails and clams. Pufferfish will puff up and have their bodies expand when they feel threatened. They should be placed with large fish and they can eat small fish and crustaceans.

  • Rabbitfish

    Rabbitfish are a very shy fish. They need plenty of swim room and will feed on marine algae. They do have venomous spines to keep others away. Use caution when placing with corals as they are not reef safe.

  • Shark

    Sharks are great additions for large aquariums. They require plenty of swim room and soft substrate. Place them with large fish and watch them go!

  • Tangs & Surgeons

    Tangs are one of the most sought after saltwater aquarium fish in the hobby. There are many different varieties of tangs and temperaments. They can be kept in a reef aquarium or fish only tank. Some tangs can become quite large and should be housed in larger aquariums. Tangs can be aggressive to other tangs and should be placed in the aquarium in order of their temperament, being least aggressive first to the most aggressive last.

  • Triggers

    Triggers are a fish that should be kept with caution. They can be aggressive to other marine inhabitants and are usually not considered reef safe. Like other marine fish they have their own personality and if kept well fed and in larger aquariums have been know to be fine with other fish and not to damage coral.

  • Waspfish

    The Waspfish are native to the Indian Ocean and the West Pacific. They are closely related to the Scorpionfishes. Waspfishe are often venomous; having poison glands on their spines.

  • Wrasse

    Wrasses are a colorful medium size fish that are not normally aggressive to other saltwater inhabitants. With that being said some wrasses can be aggressive to other like wrasses. Care should also be taken when picking a wrasse. Some wrasses like to bury and should be kept in an aquarium with a deep enough sand bed to accommodate this.
