Some of the common names Sarcophyton coral is Mushroom, Leather, or Trough Corals. Toadstool corals are commonly found on reef flats and in lagoons and are in various shades colors with the most colorful being from Tonga and Fiji.
The Leather Corals are a non-aggressive coral so adequate space should be provided between them and other corals in the reef aquarium that are more aggressive. Some Leather corals are know to produce toxins which are harmful to other reef inhabitants.
Culturing of the colony is often accomplished by taking a slice of the coral by dividing it across the length and across the top like a pie and attaching that piece to live rock.
The symbiotic algae zooxanthellae hosted within its body provides a majority of its nutritional needs and does not need to be fed.
