Soft corals have a soft internal fleshy / woody skeleton and are usually a great beginner coral to buy. Many of these soft corals can tolerant a variety aquarium conditions and can be a good place to start when moving from a fish only to a reef aquarium.
The LPS corals are generally larger calcareous corals than SPS coral and usually have a much larger fleshy polyp. Many LPS corals are hardy, easy to keep, and can even be fast growing. They will usually require less intense lighting and a lower water movement than SPS coral. Many LPS are excellent beginner coral!
The Small Polyped Stony corals (SPS) have small polyps on a calcareouss skeleton which can be either branching or plated. SPS are coral which are usually more difficult to keep than the LPS or soft corals and should not be considered a beginner coral.
Mushrooms corals are a wonderful and colorful addition to coral reef aquariums. Mushrooms corals are usually easy to keep and grow at a faster pace than many other corals. Mushroom corals are quite often very affordable.
Zoanthids, Palyothoa and other polyp corals offer a huge variety of colors and patterns. Most of these corals are very affordbale and easy to keep in a reef aquarium.
Aquacultured corals are live corals that have been grown in a captive environment. Many of these corals have many generations between them and their wild mother colony. Aquacultured corals are hardier and typically easier to keep in the home reef aquarium than their wild caught counterparts.
